Most modern RC cars run on a wireless frequency called 2.4 GHz. Older RC cars used a fixed frequency, which meant two people could not always drive at the same time in the same area without their signals interfering with each other. 2.4 GHz technology fixes this by constantly hopping between different small channels within that band, so your transmitter and receiver stay linked to each other without picking up interference from someone else's car nearby. This is also why almost every RC car sold today needs to be bound to its own remote once, a quick pairing step that locks your transmitter and receiver together so they only talk to each other.

How Do RC Cars Turn
Steering in an RC car works through the servo we mentioned earlier. When you turn the steering wheel or stick on your transmitter, that signal goes to the receiver, and the receiver tells the steering servo exactly how far to turn. The servo is physically connected to the front wheels through a small linkage, so it pushes the wheels left or right by the same amount you moved the control. This is called proportional control, meaning a small turn of your control gives a small turn of the wheels, and a full turn gives a full turn of the wheels, rather than the wheels only being able to snap fully left or fully right like some very basic toys.

Top speed depends entirely on the specific car, its motor, its battery, and its gearing, so there is no single answer that applies to every RC car. Toy grade cars are usually built for control and durability rather than raw speed, so they tend to move at a modest, easy to manage pace. Hobby grade cars vary a lot more, entry level hobby models are often moderately quick, while dedicated high speed or racing style RC cars with brushless motors and higher voltage batteries can reach genuinely high speeds, sometimes fast enough to be difficult for a beginner to control safely. When comparing speed claims between products, it helps to know whether the number quoted is the manufacturer's advertised top speed under ideal conditions, or a speed someone has actually tested in real use, since these can differ.
How to Operate an RC Car
Operating an RC car for the first time is simple once you understand the two main controls. Most transmitters use either a trigger style throttle with a steering wheel, common on car shaped remotes, or two joysticks, common on simpler remotes. The throttle control moves the car forward or backward, the steering control turns the wheels left or right, and both usually respond proportionally, so gentle inputs give gentle movement. Before your first drive, make sure the battery is fully charged, the transmitter has fresh or charged batteries of its own, and the car is bound to the remote, most modern RC cars either bind automatically when both are switched on, or need a quick one time binding button press, which is usually explained in the manual that comes with the car.
Can You Drive an RC Car on the Road
This depends on local rules, which vary by area, so it is worth checking what applies where you live rather than assuming. As a general guide though, driving an RC car on a public road is usually not something that is formally allowed, mainly because roads are meant for licensed vehicles and RC cars are not built with the safety features or visibility that road use assumes. In practice, many people do drive RC cars in quiet residential streets without issue, but the safer and more reliable places to drive are private property with the owner's permission, open outdoor areas like a park or empty ground where RC use is not restricted, or a dedicated RC track if there is one near you. This also depends on the type of car, a slow toy grade car in an empty street is a very different situation from a high speed hobby grade car near moving traffic or pedestrians.

A lot of the confusion people have about RC cars comes down to not realizing there are two very different categories being sold under the same name. Toy grade RC cars are built as sealed units, affordable, easy to use, but not designed to be opened up or repaired once something breaks. Hobby grade RC cars are built from separate, replaceable parts, the motor, ESC, battery, and servo can all be swapped or upgraded individually, which is why they last longer and can grow with you as you get more into the hobby. Neither one is better in an absolute sense, it depends entirely on what you actually want from it, a casual gift for a child versus a car you plan to maintain and upgrade over years are two very different use cases.
